Vsync Defaults

Post  Excrubulent on Thu Oct 24, 2013 2:43 am

Just a quick observation - for some reason many games have vsync on by default, and when the menu starts up, there's this sluggish, unresponsive feeling.  I find that switching off vsync is the best thing I can do to improve my overall experience of a game.

In this case, I found that the menus looked really cool and did a fantastic job of guiding the player's eye to the point of focus, but they felt too slow.  Once I got into the customisation and really started using the menus in anger, the sluggishness became a big problem.  That's when I realised that vsync was probably on.  I switched it off, and the menus were snappier and better to navigate and the gameplay itself suddenly got a lot more responsive.  The single-player campaign became less frustrating.

For me vertical tearing is far less noticeable than the lag problem, and it creates fewer gameplay problems.  It seems to me that multiplayer competition between players with & without vsync would create some serious advantages for the no-vsync people.

Then again, with all the straight lines in the UI, maybe the tearing on lower-end systems is a big problem.  Is that the reason for the default?

In all honesty, I defaulted VSynch to On since it is what most games seem to do. I also prefer it when not playing competitively as I am sensitive to screen tearing.

I agree with Excrubulent and prefer VSync off. It's apparently more responsive. Are you on high-end system, Paul?

That's fair enough. For myself as soon as I stop looking for tearing, it vanishes from my attention. The vsync, on the other hand, just makes it feel a little bit *ick* the whole time.

Anyway, it's probably worth having a think about vsync and whether you want your players to see slight lag or slight tearing when they start the game.

I get the sense a lot of AAA studios have vsync on by default because the game's marketing needs good trailers. Tearing shows up in trailers but lag doesn't.

I play on a 120hz monitor, so it is pretty responsive even with VSynch on. Smile I suppose I could default it to off, as people would be more likely to check for the option if they are annoyed by screen tearing than vice versa.

Dang it, there's another upgrade on the wish-list.  Razz  That explains why even my 7850 wasn't able to fix the lag, if it's about the monitor.

I'd tend to agree.  When I get lag I don't often immediately think of vsync as a cause, although I'll be more vigilant now.  It's far more likely to turn me off the game, and it certainly turned me off back in the times when I just assumed my computer was too crappy to run the game.

Yeah, I just checked:

Vsync off: approx. 220 fps (feels good!)
Vsync on: exactly 60 fps (feels ick!)

Apparently I can tell the difference between 60 fps and higher.  I can live with that.
